Freelancer is one of the larger online marketplaces where people can find paid freelance work. It connects clients with freelancers across writing, design, programming, marketing, data entry, virtual assistance, translation, and many other skills.

The basic idea is simple. Clients post projects with their requirements and budget, while freelancers create profiles, browse projects, and submit bids explaining what they can do and how much they will charge.

There are both fixed-price and hourly projects. You can also enter contests where clients choose from submitted designs or other creative work. This gives beginners several ways to look for work instead of relying on one type of job.

The platform covers a very wide range of skills. Current categories include article writing, copywriting, SEO, data entry, virtual assistance, web development, graphic design, translation, social media marketing, and software development.

Freelancer is free to join and free members initially receive six bids per month. However, freelancers must maintain at least $20 in available account balance before placing a bid under the current standard requirement.

The platform charges freelancers 10% or $5, whichever is higher, on fixed-price projects. Hourly projects carry a 10% fee. That means you need to include the platform fee when deciding what to charge clients.

Once you complete a project, the client releases the money through Freelancer’s Milestone Payment system. You can then withdraw your earnings through options such as PayPal, Payoneer, Skrill, bank transfer, or wire transfer, depending on your country.

Freelancer can work well for beginners, but getting your first project may take patience. Popular jobs can attract many bids, so having a clear profile, useful portfolio samples, and focused proposals gives you a better chance.
