Vocal Media is a publishing platform where writers can share stories, build an audience, and earn money from their work.

It accepts different types of writing, including fiction, creative nonfiction, reviews, opinion pieces, and other content that fits its communities. You keep the copyright to your stories after publishing them.

Vocal has two creator options: Vocal Free and Vocal+. Both allow creators to publish and earn through certain features. The main difference is that read-based earnings are now available only to Vocal+ members. Free creators can still receive tips and may qualify for leaderboard bonuses and some writing challenges.

Vocal+ costs $9.99 per month or $99 per year. Members can earn from reader engagement, receive a lower withdrawal threshold, and access Creator Subscriptions. The current read rate for Vocal+ is $6 per 1,000 reads, although Vocal says earning rates can change.

Creators can also receive tips from readers. Vocal processes these payments through Stripe, and Stripe must be connected before you can publish stories or receive earnings.

Free creators have a $35 withdrawal minimum, while Vocal+ members can request a withdrawal after reaching $20. Approved withdrawals are sent to Stripe and should appear in the Stripe account within five business days.

Vocal can suit writers who enjoy publishing often and promoting their work. It can also help you build a body of published work while testing different topics and writing styles.

The main drawback is that read-based income requires a paid Vocal+ membership, so you need enough readership to make the membership worthwhile.
