The company says the process usually takes two to five weeks, although the exact time can vary. Its published screening information says fewer than 3% of applicants are accepted.

Once accepted, developers create a profile showing their skills, experience, availability, and preferred work arrangements. Toptal’s matching team then connects members with suitable client opportunities. Developers can also review available jobs instead of competing through the usual low-bid system found on many freelance sites.

Toptal also handles client billing and invoicing. Developers set their own hourly rate, and Toptal says it does not take a cut from the rate the freelancer sets. Payments are made in US dollars, with the platform managing the billing process between the client and freelancer.

This makes Toptal a strong option for experienced developers rather than beginners learning to code. The screening process is demanding, but accepted developers gain access to vetted clients and projects without having to build a reputation from scratch on an open marketplace.
