Toptal is a freelance talent network for experienced finance professionals and management consultants.

The finance track is aimed at professionals who can handle higher-level work such as financial modeling, valuation, FP&A, M&A, startup funding, forecasting, pricing, and CFO support. Toptal also lists financial analysts, CFAs, corporate finance consultants, investment banking professionals, and other finance specialists.

This is very different from a typical freelance marketplace. You do not spend your time bidding against dozens of freelancers for every project.

You first apply to join the Toptal network. The screening process tests your English and communication skills, finance knowledge, problem-solving, and practical ability. Toptal says fewer than 3% of applicants are accepted.

Finance applicants can expect several stages before acceptance. These include a language and personality review, an in-depth skill review, a live screening, and a practical test project.

The test project can take one to three weeks and is designed to show how you handle real finance work.

Once accepted, you can set your own hourly rate. Toptal says it does not take a cut from the rate you set. The company handles client billing and invoicing, while you focus on the engagement.

Finance work can be hourly, part-time, or full-time. Current finance roles include financial analysis, financial modeling, forecasting, corporate finance, investment banking, valuation, and interim CFO work.

The platform also handles the client matching process. Once your profile shows that you are available, Toptal’s team can match you with projects that fit your skills and preferences.

This can remove one of the hardest parts of freelance finance work: constantly looking for the next client.

The trade-off is the entry barrier. Toptal is built for experienced professionals, so having only basic accounting or finance knowledge will not be enough.

Toptal also expects strong communication skills because finance experts often work directly with company leaders and senior teams.

For someone with a strong finance background, the model can be attractive. You get access to serious clients, choose your rate, and avoid competing for every project through open bidding.
