This gives editors room to focus on the areas where they have the strongest experience instead of accepting every type of editing job. Clients can search profiles by service and genre, review an editor’s background and portfolio, and request a quote.

The platform is selective. Reedsy currently accepts around 1% of freelancer applications, and its professional community includes thousands of publishing specialists. Applicants need to create a detailed profile showing their professional experience, services, and previous work. If accepted, the profile becomes available to authors searching the Reedsy Marketplace.

Once your profile is active, clients can discover your services and request quotes. Reedsy limits clients to contacting up to five professionals for a project, which can reduce the amount of direct competition compared with general freelance marketplaces where dozens or hundreds of people may apply for the same job. You decide which projects to pursue and provide your own quotes to potential clients.

Reedsy also handles important parts of the business process. Contracts, invoices, messaging, file sharing, and payments can all be managed through the platform. You can create a payment schedule with multiple installments, and payments are automatically processed according to the agreed dates. Reedsy uses Stripe to process freelancer payments.

The platform charges professionals a 10% service fee on their projects under its standard fee structure. This means an editor keeps 90% of the project fee before payment processing costs.

Reedsy can reduce the professional fee for larger cumulative client relationships, with the professional share falling from 10% to 7% as the amount transacted with a particular client increases.

Reedsy is best for editors who already have professional experience, a strong portfolio, and a clear publishing specialty. It is not designed as an entry-level proofreading site where someone can sign up and immediately start completing small tasks.
