Appen runs remote AI data projects through its contributor platform, CrowdGen. Language and linguistics work is one of the main areas available to contributors.

These projects can involve translation review, linguistic evaluation, transcription, speech recording, language data creation, cultural checks, and AI response evaluation.

The work varies by project. One role may ask you to review AI-generated translations, while another may involve recording sentences in your native language or checking whether AI responses sound natural.

For example, a current CrowdGen translation evaluator role pays $2 per completed unit, with earnings of up to $20 per hour. The role asks bilingual workers to judge translation accuracy, tone, and natural language use.

Other language projects use a different pay model. A recent Lao voice recording project pays $0.05 for each accepted sentence, with 250 sentences paying up to $12.50 for the session.

CrowdGen also lists language expert projects that can pay much more. Some specialist language evaluation roles have advertised rates above $25 per hour, although the rate, country, and requirements depend on the individual project.

Your language ability is the main skill for this type of work. Some projects require native fluency, while others need strong skills in two languages, translation experience, linguistics knowledge, or cultural knowledge.

You may also need to pass a language test or project qualification before getting access to paid tasks. The exact process depends on the project.

Many projects are fully remote and let you choose your working hours within the project’s required schedule. CrowdGen says contributors can find projects across more than 500 languages and over 200 countries.

Payment options vary by location. CrowdGen currently lists PayPal, Payoneer, Airtm, and direct bank payments among the available options.

The main issue is project availability. Passing a qualification does not guarantee that you will receive steady work. Projects can have country limits, language quotas, task limits, or fixed end dates.

Recent contributor feedback also raises concerns about delayed payments, account issues, project availability, and support. Those reports are worth considering because language projects can require substantial time for tests and training before paid work begins.

Appen can still be useful for people with strong language skills who want flexible AI-related work. It makes more sense as a source of project-based income than as a guaranteed regular job.
